EU Rules Google Must Amend Some Search Results. A European court has ruled that Google must amend some of its search results at the request of ordinary people when they show links to "inadequate" or "no longer relevant" information.

The Court of Justice of the European Union took up a complaint concerning a Spanish citizen to have a "right to be forgotten" when data about individuals becomes outdated.

The court said Tuesday Google and other search engines have control of individuals' private information because it processes links about a person and presents it in a systematic way. It found that individuals have a right to control their private data under European law, even if the information was legally published, and especially if the individuals are not public figures.

There was no immediate response from Google.

Google had argued that it does not control personal data and only offers links to information freely available on the Internet. It had also argued that removing data on a person would amount to censorship.
